Why doesn't my Word draw underlines?

The "Critique" API that powers the wavy underlines is only available in M365 builds of Word (16.85+). On Word for Mac perpetual or older Word builds, Cite Scan still scans every citation and shows them as cards in the side pane — the underlines are unavailable. Click any card to scroll to the citation in your document.

The add-in won't install ("Add-in no longer available")

Word's launcher caches a stale GUID/path mapping. Quit Word fully (Cmd+Q on Mac), then:

rm -f ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Documents/wef/*.manifest.xml
rm -rf "$HOME/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/16.0/Wef/AggregatedCache"
rm -rf "$HOME/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Library/Caches/WebKit/NetworkCache"

Re-launch Word and re-sideload the manifest URL.

How do I cancel?

Click the gear icon in the side pane → Manage subscription → opens the Stripe customer portal. Cancel from there. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your billing period.

I cancelled but my license still works

The license is cached on each device for up to 24 hours. Within 24 hours of cancellation, scanning will stop. If you need immediate revocation, email support and we'll force-revoke server-side.

I need a refund

Refunds are available within 14 days of purchase if you have not used the Service. Email support@getproofbrief.com with your subscription receipt.

How accurate is "Unindexed" vs "Likely invalid"?

Unindexed (amber) means CourtListener returned a 404 for a recognized reporter format. The case may be real but not in the open index — many state-trial-court rulings, recent unpublished opinions, and pre-1900 cases land here. Always verify Unindexed cases through Westlaw / LEXIS or your library before relying.

Likely invalid (red) means CourtListener could not match the reporter or the cite shape itself. Either the citation is fabricated or it's malformed enough that no normalization recovers it.

Both states default to "verify externally". The product never claims a case exists when it doesn't.
